Challenges & Opportunities

• Dependent on the operational efficiency and reliability of 16 pipeline

terminals/facilities across the US and Gulf of Mexico
• During the last 18 months, the Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)

system used to control and deliver Shell Pipeline’s products was disrupted >12x with
network “brown out” outages yielding significant revenue loss

• Needed an SDWAN product that could provide active/active link aggregation for
primary (AT&T) and secondary (Verizon) WAN circuits

• Needed fail-to-wire capabilities, serial HA capabilities and optimal failover capabilities
with network visibility and reporting capabilities

Why Citrix SD-WAN
• Evaluated Cisco iWAN (too complex) and Silver Peak (“too software”) and did not work

for fail-to-wire and serial HA testing and performance metrics did not meet their

requirements
• Citrix SD-WAN provides optimal performance, fail-to-wire + serial HA capabilities, and

ease in installation, configuration and management

Results
• Purchased 16 x Citrix SD-WAN 2100-300 (Standard Edition) configured in HA pair across

8 sites to address Shell Pipeline’s reliability and high-availability needs
