Chapter 9
Know Your Rights
“The one thing that stood out about our experience with Bryson was how good they were at explaining ‘how the
system works.’ No one else ever explained it to us as clearly as the Bryson staff did. They understood our situation
and gave us good advice.”
Testimonial from client, Charles C.
One thing that is very important to me is that you know what your rights are before you communicate
with the IRS. Too many people do not know their rights and begin speaking with the IRS without being
made aware of what their rights are.
The IRS has created a Taxpayer Bill of Rights for each and every taxpayer. These are ten rights you
should try to remember and keep in mind before dealing with the IRS.
The Taxpayer Bill of Rights consists of ten rights:
1. The Right to Be Informed
2. The Right to Quality Service
3. The Right to Pay No More than the Correct Amount of Tax
4. The Right to Challenge the IRS’s Position and Be Heard
5. The Right to Appeal an IRS Decision in an Independent Forum
6. The Right to Finality
7. The Right to Privacy
8. The Right to Confidentiality
9. The Right to Retain Representation
10. The Right to a Fair and Just Tax System
