This three-hour session will review the law on gifted
and talented education in New Jersey, including the
recently enacted Strengthening Gifted and Talented
Education Act (SGTEA) and its new requirements for
school districts. Representatives of the NJDOE will
discuss recent developments at the department with
gifted and talented education, including the work
LEGAL ONE Workshops FEA Professional Learning
of the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education
Act Committee. NJPSA representatives will report on
the recently created NJPSA Gifted Committee and its
workings as well as information on the passage and
implementation of the SGTEA. The session will also
include a discussion of best practices, guidance and
resources for the equitable identification of gifted
students.

How will districts adjust their MTSS or RTI protocols
this year to meet the additional needs of students
impacted by the pandemic? In these sessions,
Dr. Amanda VanDerHeyden, who has conducted
extensive research in MTSS for mathematics, and
developed effective intervention protocols, will
review national and state data on the impact of
remote/hybrid instruction on math achievement and
provide evidence-based strategies for intervening to
enhance growth and achievement in mathematics for
all students in the context of MTSS/RTI frameworks.
