1.4 Candle Dance
The candle dance is a dance performed by a group of dancers to the accompaniment of a group of
musicians. The dancers carry lit candles on plates held on the palm of each hand. The dancers dance in
groups, rotating the plates carefully so that the plate is always horizontal, and the candles are not
extinguished. The candle dance is accompanied by some traditional Malay musical instruments, such
as Accordeon, Violin, Gong, Bonang, Tok-Tok, Guitar, Saxophone, Kenong, and Drum. Specifically, in
the South Sumatra region, the candle dance is also accompanied by Malay poems that are loaded with
teaching values.
