The border of England and Wales literally slices through this quaint town and, depending which side of the street you might be, could make your postcode an English Herefordshire or Welsh Powys one.
Lying on the south-east bank of the River Wye, Hay is the doorway to the spectacular Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons revealing stunning landscapes and scenery that will take your breath away. Moderately challenging walks like the 6 miler Hay Bluff and Twmper (the latter also known as Lord Hereford’s Knob!) are so popular with photographers and bird-spotters.
Bursting with outdoor activities and opportunities to explore, it is perfect for those seeking adventure, with fantastic opportunities for canoeing, horseriding, guided walks, mountain biking, caving, hiking or archery.
The fabulous Hay Festival, which is held for ten days each summer, attracts the most exciting writers, thinkers and artists who inspire and regale visitors from all over the world. Flanked by fringe event How the Light Gets In, the town is awash with creatives and artistes. Then a smaller Hay Winter Weekend event, still with famous faces and no less accomplished works, hails the start of the festive season.
