BRECON RFC
UNDER 15 &16 BELLUNO TOUR
At the start of April the U15 and 16s teams travelled to Belluno to ensure that the well-established links with our Friends in Italy are maintained. The teams travelled from Bristol airport and arrived in Venice / Treviso airport where they were transported to a reception at ASD Rugby Belluno Club house.
The rst morning in Italy consisted of
a tour of Belluno and a reception hosted by the Mayor of Belluno before watching a match between Rugby Alpago and ASD Belluno in the evening. The match was followed by a dinner at the clubhouse of the hosts. On the Sunday the Brecon team played against the ASD Rugby Belluno side and eventually ran out winners
by 54 - 24. Well done lads sounds like a good performance. Special thanks to all who organised the tour this end particularly Howell Havard and Helen Williams and all the sponsors.
Thanks to Brian Pritchard for coaching the team, the parents who travelled and supported the boys and our hosts in Italy who were so generous with their hospitality.
Ron Rowsell reports on the
Annual Brecon Mini Rugby Tournament...
BRECON RFC
ALL ROADS LEAD TO PARC DE PUGH
Since its inception, in 2006, the Brecon Mini Tournament has become the highlight of the season for the Mini Sections of many South Wales Rugby Clubs. Indeed, over the past ten years the Tournament has become the major focus for Mini Rugby followers.
For hundreds of young rugby players, families and friends, Easter Monday has meant a pilgrimage to Brecon, with all roads leading to Parc de Pugh. That was apart from this year, 2016, when 700 young players were due to travel to Brecon only for the atrocious, prolonged, wet winter to interfere. To cancel the Tournament would have been a complete disaster and
so it was decided to re-arrange the Tournament for Sunday 24th April. This obviously caused
a great deal of re-organising and for some teams with other commitments the new date was unsuitable. However, with a majority still eager to attend, the Tournament, although slightly abbreviated, went ahead. With the sun shining but with the weather still cold, some 500 young rugby players made their way to Brecon’s Parc De Pugh
Looking back at the number of outstanding tournaments it is easy to see why, in spite of the re-arrangements, there was still a great deal of enthusiasm. The major critical ingredient was, as always, the amazing individual skills and team play displayed by every participating club. Side steps, dummies, wonderfully timed passes and crunching tackles were undoubtedly witnessed as once again the youngsters produced a level of enthusiasm and brand of entertainment that would be dif cult to match at any level. It was, therefore, not surprising that sponsors continued to be willing to add their names to the event and agreed to back Paul Amphlett and his team of organisers and of cials.
While all of this support was essential, it was the young visiting teams and their supporters who paid us the biggest complement as they make their re-arranged pilgrimage to Brecon. As a host Club, we had an outstanding day thanks to the unstinting efforts of all who helped prepare the elds, organised, of ciated and put in many hours of voluntary time.
The visitors also enjoyed a great day and their feelings can best be represented by a response from Dan Forrester of Builth Wells, “On behalf of the Builth U8s, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your colleagues, for all the hard work and effort you have put in to organising such a brilliant festival this year. Both our boys and parents from the Builth U8s team loved the friendly and competitive environment. We shall look forward to future events.” While the Tournament threw up team winners the real winner was the spirit of rugby and having overcome this potential setback Paul and his team will look forward to future events.
