Dating back over 1000 years, Kington’s historic market town is very close to the border of Wales and sits alongside the famous Hergest Ridge and Offa’s Dyke, where musician Mike Oldfield gained inspiration for his music and composed the magical Tubular Bells and where pop star Ellie Goulding was educated.
Surrounded by beautiful hills and spectacular views, Kington is well known for its Walking Festival in September and recognised as a Walkers are Welcome town; a magnet for muddy boots from afar and near all year round, who enjoy its position on both the routes of The Herefordshire Trail and the Mortimer Trail (see p74). The Stables self catering accommodation at beautiful Dunfield House provides the perfect informal stay for groups of this kind who love their freedom.

restaurants, delicatessens and quirky shops, plus a snippet of history to explore. The iconic image of the clock tower and market hall, from where many events and festivals launch and which was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, is a postcard favourite, and alongside this is the quaint Place de Marines named after Kington’s Twin Town in France.
