Chapter 16
Call in the pros
What’s the biggest change in book publishing
over the last five years? Once upon a time, you’d
send your manuscript to a publisher or find an
agent to do it for you for a commission. Banking on
the agent’s negotiating skills and expertise, you
stood to get a better deal in the long run than you
could by negotiating yourself. But that’s not the case
anymore.
New business models are popping up every-
where offering publishing services on demand.
Everything from advice on how to get published or
self-published, manuscript coaching, editorial ser-
vices and marketing support is there for the click-
ing.
Today, conventional book publishers rely increas-
ingly on a few blockbusters to pay for the flops.
