What do all these things have in common?
They’re emotional hooks for rational points. Grab-
bing your attention, holding your interest and offer-
ing solutions.
Hooks and Points
A killer title is a crucial hook. Even if it’s only a
working title, a great self-help title must include or
imply a benefit. Remember, a benefit is anything that
makes your reader’s life better, faster, cheaper, hap-
pier, tastier and so on. For example:
• What To Expect When You’re Expecting
• Think and Grow Rich
• The Cake Mix Doctor
• How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or
Less
• The Barbecue Bible
Subtle might work in literary fiction, but it never
works in self-help book titles unless you’re famous.
You need your own emotional “hook” and rational
“point.”
• The “hook” gets the audience’s attention and
holds their interest.
