All business is about taking good ideas to mar-
ket. You take a good idea, turn it into a big idea,
and take it to the people.
In 1762, John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich, had a
good idea. He was a big-time gambler who didn’t like to
leave the gaming table. When he became hungry, he told
his servants, “Bring me a slice of meat between two slices
of bread.” This was the birth of the sandwich.
Henry Heinz had a good idea: He put tomato ketchup
in a bottle. Levi Strauss had a good idea: He made trou-
sers out of tent cloth. Bill Gates had a good idea: to put a
computer on every desk. John Kimberly and Charles Clark
had a good idea: a soft tissue paper to remove cold cream.
Today you can eat a cheese sandwich while you boot up
Windows in your Levi’s and wipe the ketchup off your fin-
gers with a Kleenex. These good ideas are now enduring
big ideas, and have created jobs for countless thousands
