These imaginative touches have a persuasive impact
on the first impression you choose to create because they
offer a controlled glimpse of your personality—they sug-
gest what you’ll be like when people get to know you.
The KFC of Fashion
Say you want to spiff up your look. How do you figure
out what clothes or accessories to buy? Do you look
at your peers? Do you look at the boss? Do you look to
the fashion pages? What’s a good basic way to figure out
what works?
You can begin by asking some KFC questions: Where
do I want to fit on the approachability/authority scale?
(The middle is not a good place to be—err on the side of
authority.) What do I want my clothing to communicate
to others? How much of a chameleon do I want to be? Is
there an aspect of my personality that I want my personal
packaging to emphasize? Does my current wardrobe do
this? Take into account your physical characteristics and
make sure the look you’re creating works with them.
Next, get savvy. Read the top fashion magazines in
your country. Study international publications, espe-
cially the French, English, and Italian men’s and women’s
