find your style
play it safe with a wardrobe that’s more perpetual—a
cashmere sweater or a navy suit—or you can be trendy.
Just remember, if you go for an up-to-the-minute look, be
prepared to replace your clothes frequently. In business,
when your clothes are out-of-date, you are out-of-date.
5. Does my footwear send the right message?
One of the first things men look at in women, and women
in men, is their footwear. Are the shoes worn, cracked,
dirty, or out-of-date? Do they match the outfit? Make
a statement? My red shoes add a playful note to an
otherwise straightforward style.
6. Are my clothes too busy or distracting?
Can people concentrate on your ideas without being
distracted or overwhelmed by your sartorial splendor?
What overall message is your wardrobe signaling to others?
7. Does my clothing give other people ammunition
to criticize me?
Do your clothes fit properly? Are they too big or too
small? Size doesn’t matter—fit matters. Do you look
clean? Have you paid attention to detail? Are you
tastefully dressed and is your overall image congruent
with your personality and your ideas?
Remember, your clothes convey a lot about you. Invest in
a wardrobe with the same care as you invest your savings.
There will be a payoff.
