Last year I visited some thirty cities in an exhaust-
ing but exciting six-week business trip. One early
afternoon I flew into a city I had never visited
before. I stopped at the airport information desk to ask a
question. The response was a grunt and a finger pointing
me in the right direction. No eye contact and no courtesy—
nothing. What a lousy setup for a famous city.
The next day I flew into St. Louis. Before the door to the
aircraft opened, I looked out the window next to me and
saw that the baggage handlers had already positioned the
rolling conveyor up to the forward baggage hold. The lug-
gage was starting to roll off our plane. There was a guy at
the bottom of the conveyor who, as he picked up each bag,
