work your ABC: attitude, body language, and congruence
EXERCISE
Attitudes Drive Behavior
This is an exercise in attitude adjustment. Take a few
minutes to set aside your reservations, to prepare
yourself for an imaginative journey down the halls of your
office. Don’t worry, we’re not asking you to look foolish—
you’re going to look normal to your office mates. Ninety-
nine percent of this exercise is going on inside your head.
Show only enough of this behavior to remind yourself
what’s going on.
• One morning, imagine you are a hippopotamus. Take on
the slow, rolling walk and deliberate stare of the hippo—
get in a hippo mood, or attitude. Got it? Now walk around
the office, greeting people as you go. Notice how it feels.
• The next day, imagine you are a kangaroo, bouncing
around all peppy and intense. Put on a kangaroo
attitude and greet some more people. Notice how this
feels. How is it different from feeling like a hippo?
• Finally, imagine you are a cougar, sleek, prowling,
supremely aware, and confident as you make your
way to your office.
Did you notice a difference in how people responded to
you? Did you radiate a different type of energy? Did people
seem more energetic when you were a kangaroo? Did they
talk a little slower when you were a hippo? Did they seem a
little skittish, or even a bit jumpy, when you were a cougar?
