danced with it over to the cart. What a great attitude this
guy had! He looked like he was having a great time (mind
you, he could have been doing it to keep warm; it was win-
ter), and that set me up for the city. This is fabulous, I said
to myself. I like this place already.
What was I reacting to through the aircraft window? I
didn’t know the guy; I’d never seen him before, and for all
I knew I’d never see him again. But something about this
stranger who didn’t even know I existed had touched me.
He’d gotten to me with attitude. Attitudes drive behav-
ior. Before you say a word, they can infect the people who
see you with the same behavior. Just as laughing, crying,
and yawning are infectious, attitude is infectious. Somehow
just by looking, I had been infected by this man’s attitude,
and it caused me to feel joy—without thinking.
The ABC of Nonverbal
Communication: Attitude, Body
Language, and Congruence
Your attitude is the first thing people pick up on in face-
to-face communication. And just as you can consciously
neutralize the fight-or-flight response, so you can control
and adjust your attitude, if you want to. The key to commu-
nicating your attitude is body language and congruence.
