Speak the Language
of the Brain
When it comes to making an immediate connec-
tion, good intentions can take us places we never
meant to go. Listen to this airline pilot I recently
flew with: “Howdy folks, this is the captain. It’s good to
have you aboard. Now that we’re on our way, I thought
I’d just take a few moments to let you know that we don’t
anticipate any bad weather, so we shouldn’t encounter
any bumps, and if everything goes according to plan, there
shouldn’t be any problem arriving on time in London.”
Yikes! All of a sudden every bit of high-flying anxiety
I ever felt had been activated. I’d had one of those good-
karma days—smooth sailing on the way to the airport,
polite check-in staff, a great seat. But now, here was the
captain reciting every frequent flier’s worst fears—a
rough ride, bad weather, and problems arriving on time at
the other end. And I wasn’t the only one to feel this way.
There were plenty of nervous glances exchanged between
the other passengers.
