Hawks draw Stevens in title tilt

Hopkinton’s Lady Hawks Girls Soccer team dominated the semifinal game in Laconia
Tuesday, on a cold October night shutting out Raymond 3-0 to secure their spot in the 2018
D-III finals. The finals will be played against a tough #2 Stevens team who the Hawks Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
split the head to head match-up in the regular season. The win followed last Friday’s 3-1
Quarterfinal match over Gilford.
The Hawks started the semifinal game battling for possession with Raymond who was up
th
for the challenge. It was not until about the 26 minute that the Hawks were able to break
the deadlock, when a shot came back off the Raymond crossbar to find freshman forward
Jessie Carney crashing the goal. After that goal, the Hawks seemed to be able to settle in
and create better chances through combination play. About 10 minutes later the Hawks got
on the board again when senior forward Grace Clark found streaking junior forward Lillie
Presti who put her team up by two leading into the second half.
The second half continued much the same way as the first, and the Hawks continued to
rd
push forward looking for the 3 goal. With that continued pressure, they were rewarded 11
in the 60th minute when senior midfielder Meg Ellsworth hit a nice ball over the top of
the Raymond back line where lightning quick Carney ran onto the ball and finished with a
perfectly placed shot to the left side of the goal. The Hawks saw the game out by buckling
down defensively and recording the shutout.
Senior GK Amelia Bassett recorded the shutout. The final vs Stevens is on Sunday at
4:00 pm again at Laconia HS.
The Lady Hawks looked good in the quarterfinal game. They got their first goal within
nine minutes when freshman forward Jess Carney assisted senior forward Grace Clark),
th
who hit a touch past the Gilford keeper. The Hawks scored again in the 28 minute when
th
senior midfielder gave Carney a little pass at the top of the box and Carney (11 g) slotted it
home in the bottom right corner of the goal. The Hawks went into halftime up by two goals.

Knowing Gilford would not give up the Hawks didn’t either. Hopkinton scored their 3
two minutes after the start of the half. This time Grace Clark followed and pressured a weak
back pass from a Gilford defender to keeper and Clark outsmarted them by intercepting
and finishing with ease. Gilford got their goal in the last minute of play off of a free kick.
