Attila, king of the Huns, died in 453. His light

went out like the snuffing of a candle. He was

a lamp burning on the earth. But Rome was

not delivered from her enemies. The Vandal

king, Genseric, was in the height of his power,

and continued to ravage the southern coasts

until the final overthrow, about twelve years

later.

Roman power was lost, although in name the

Western Empire still existed. A Roman,

Attalus, was seated on the throne by Alaric,

the Goth, and recognized as sovereign by the

rightful heir to the throne. The Vandals

tormented the government until life was a
