still a senate at Rome, and it purchased peace

of the Huns. This was a part of the

“wormwood” which Rome was caused to

drink. In 433 Attila and his brother became

joint rulers of the barbarians, and in a treaty

with the emperor, the Huns “dictated the

conditions of peace; each condition was an

insult on the majesty of the empire. Besides

the freedom of a safe and plentiful market on

the banks of the Danube, they required that

the annual contribution should be augmented

from three hundred and fifty pounds of gold to

seven hundred pounds of gold; that a fine, or

ransom, of eight pieces of gold should be paid
