• Every defect in our characters is to be

discerned and cut away with unsparing

decision.

• Reveal to the mind the character of the

consecration that God will accept.

• Withdraw the affections from the things

of this earth and fills the soul with the

desire for holiness.

• It is the mercy of God or in mercy that He

reveals to us our hidden defects. He

would have us critically examine the

complicated emotions and motives of our

own hearts, and detect that which is

wrong, and modify our dispositions and

refine our manners. God would have us

become acquainted with our own hearts.

In order to bring us to a knowledge of our

condition, He permits the fire of affliction

to assail us so that we may be purified.
