CHAPTER 18 - INDUSTRY AFFAIRS, ICA AND MY BOARD CAREER TAKES OFF
An ICA executive was appointed with specific responsibility for federal government relations-that was Philip Maguire, the Deputy Chief Executive, and we opened a new office in Canberra.
I also engaged the services of Terry McMullan, a person who had a great deal of experience, both as a journalist and a script writer. Interestingly his earliest journalistic career was as editor of the Times of Zambia.
Terry was to take over the marketing and lobby, bringing into focus the work undertaken by the industry and the benefits to the community. Terry today is the owner and
Editor of The Insurance News and the instigator of new initiatives incorporating many seminars for government and industry. It could be said that he and the team changed the ICA organisation and put us on the front foot, particularly in places where there were catastrophes so as to ensure that the consumer received a prompt response to their claims.
Conferences and Seminars
At the same time, we significantly developed our Conferences and Seminars capability, headed up by Terry McMullan. This delivered on both our Lobby and Industry Forum objectives. We held an annual conference and an annual dinner which was usually attended by in excess of 500 people, including politicians from government and opposition at Federal and State levels, as well as leading industry and public service people.
