Recruiting became a critical factor, and the following constraints were applied:
■ where recruitment statistics were available, they were measured against those of
the premiership clubs’ best players
■ the statistics for every club in the competition were analysed for the past three years, and then set against East Sydney’s gures
■ these analyses revealed that East Sydney was short by around ve to six goals every game
■ the team needed a ve-to-eight goal improvement per game to have any impact
■ achieve this and East Sydney would be the next year’s Premiers

This ambitious target was achieved. East Sydney went through undefeated in the next season’s home-and-away contests and took out the Premiership for the next ve years!
