What method do you use and how do you apply it?
As I only have the class for one year, I choose to keep it simple. Currently, I am using a lot of Start-
klart, as they are simple, quick to learn and fun.
What additional material do you use?
I use Essential Elements, Blåståget and Startklart. As well as this Agnes and I are constantly ai-
ring new ideas and ways to make YCB even more exciting for the pupils – we even had a seminar
for our class bands last year, so pupils from both schools were able to meet each other and play
together.
What is your goal for the students participating in the Yamaha class band?
Because my school is lucky enough to loan instruments free from the local children’s wind band
we hope that this YCB project will add to their numbers!
What do you think is the added value of a Yamaha class band?
Children really get a sense of ownership and responsibility for their instrument. They are expected
to work independently, often helping each other out rather than relying on me all the time. And as
a teacher, it’s very special to hear the way pupils support each other – often congratulating and
praising each other for good playing.
What would you like to learn yourself?
To become a bit more competent with brass instruments. Agnes can vouch for the fact that my
trumpet skills are less-than average...
Would you like to say something to your European colleagues?
Keep up the good work, and keep blowing!
