HAVE YOU EVER
HAVE YOU EVER? ?
Have you ever held the handle of a frying pan and felt
that it was hot? Or sat near a campfire and felt your
body warm even though you were not touching the
fire? Without realizing it, situations like these are
commonly encountered in everyday life. Clothes dry
when exposed to sunlight, a cup of hot coffee gives off
warmth around it, and a bowl of hot soup makes your
hands feel warm.
All of these phenomena are related to
heat. Heat, like work, is a means of
energy transfer. It is defined as the
transfer of energy that occurs due to a
difference in temperature.
In everyday situations, heat flows from
an object at a higher temperature to an
object at a lower temperature. This
explains why wet clothes dry when
placed in sunlight, why hot coffee
gradually cools, and why holding a hot
bowl makes your hands feel warm.
