Journaling I like the tactile, visual and complete sensory experience of a physical journal.
However there are lots of options to choose from. You can have a blank
Formats & notebook as a journal, a pre-printed journal with prompts, an App on your
phone or tablet or simply a file on your laptop you write notes in. It is worth
Techniques playing around with a few different approaches to see what suits you best and
what you can consistently maintain.
Bullet or BuJo
Bullet Journaling is a very popular form of creative journaling using a
streamlined system, simple symbols, lists of bullet points and a language of short
phrases and key words. It was designed by Ryder Carroll and is part day planner,
part diary, part habit tracker and it incorporates some reflection tools. The aim is
to use tagging and categories to create your own personalized system. All you
need to start is a dot grid journal, a ruler and a thin rollerball pen.
Unstructured Freeform Journaling
This is just writing in an unstructured way based on whatever comes into your
head. In ‘The Artists Way’ by Julia Cameron she introduces the concept of
unstructured journaling with her ‘Morning Pages’ to explore your creativity. It is
a morning daily practice where you create 3 pages of unstructured writing on
your stream of consciousness. She suggests you do it for 6 weeks to find
patterns and learn about your true self. This can also includes Long Form
Journaling (more like a Diary) for deep reflection and goal setting done twice a
month, to reflect on the bigger questions in your life. Freeform Art Journals with
notes, quotes, sketches and doodles are also very popular.
Short Form Structured Journaling
Our Hikmaty journal has a clear daily, weekly and 6 weekly framework to answer
a series of structured questions and then expands into blank pages for
unstructured freeform writing and reflection. It is a good starting point for a
journaling habit and self awareness writing adventure. Brendon Burchard,
Michael Hyatt and numerous Amazon sellers also offer journal frameworks. Or
you can design and create your own using self publishing software.
