At the southernmost tip of Africa, the world’s preeminent giraffe researcher, Dr. Francois Deacon, is embarking on the most ambitious project of his career and perhaps the most ambitious project in giraffe conservation to date. On the rugged and untamed plains of South Africa’s Rooipoort Nature Reserve, Dr. Deacon will set out to capture and GPS collar 20 giraffes, a project that will enable him to study these giraffes’ every move and behaviour over the next year. Joining him on this wild expedition are renowned researchers from various parts of the world, each with unique scientific backgrounds. The team’s mission is to address various scientific questions about giraffes that have yet to be answered. Each biologist, with their own goals and objectives, will provide one piece of the puzzle of information needed to save giraffes from extinction.

When one part of the planet stirs from its wintery slumber, and the other winds down after a busy summer, nature gets ready for change! By Spring the air has lost its winter chill. Torpor and hibernation are two of nature’s most ingenious ways to cope with changes in climate, food supply and energy. Groundhogs make their way through the last snows; frogs execute their first careful moves and brown bears remove fallen branches from the entrances to their dens to clear the way for the young. Most mammals gorge on dwindling supplies, storing fat to get them through the winter months as they settle in their dens for the big sleep. But how do they know when it’s time to wake up? Melting snows, the flush of spring, summer sun or darkening days; the world may change, but nature has devised ingenious ways to thrive whatever the season.

Islands worldwide are grand experiments in nature, with their isolation creating unique conditions for animals to diverge from the norm. On the far west of the Australian continent lies Rottnest Island where one of the worlds ‘happiest’, yet most vulnerable marsupials the Quokka thrives. How do they survive here in such inhospitable conditions and nowhere else? In a world first, the entire life cycle of the Quokka will be filmed using special natural history filming techniques to expose the secrets of its survival mechanisms. Sea Dog TV International
