BULLSEYE PRAYERS First, it is possible that we are not sensitive enough to pick the signal of the Holy Spirit pointing to impending danger like Jesus did when He told His disciples that He was ‘sorrowful unto death.’ Had Peter and his colleagues been praying as a custom, crying to God regularly for strength to do His will always, they most likely would have overcome the devil’s temptation. While it is true that Jesus immediately turned to go and pray when He was prompted by the Holy Spirit, we must never discount the fact that He was already a man of prayer before that time. That such a man with His commitment to daily prayer, separating Himself many times to pray all night, and also rising up a great while before dawn to pray regularly, still needed to resort to such agonising prayer shows that the task of doing the will of God against all odds is so very important. Second, cultivating the habit of praying always on the key issues that matter to God, such as for strength to do His will, makes it easy to pray and be appropriately guided when trouble shows up, usually unexpectedly. Jesus pointed out that the problem with Peter and his colleagues was that their spirits were willing, desiring to do God’s will, be their flesh was weak! 60.
