time thinking about how to deliver some of
the curriculum on-line while they still have
some of their students with them. I can’t
commend them enough for their efforts.”
Despite the heroic efforts of area teach-
ers, the pandemic will undoubtedly have an
impact on the development of a generation
   of children.
“You know, we’re very concerned about
our little ones learning how to read,” Gute
said. “So, we’re talking about doing summer
school in both districts for students who Looking for a reliable HVAC • Heating
may have fallen behind a little bit, or need contractor serving the Southwest
a little extra help. We have an extra person Iowa area? Give family-owned • Air Conditioning

struggling readers, and things along those call. We’ve been providing our
lines.” neighbors with top-notch HVAC • Financing Available
                                                        service since 1953.
Nelson credited her students for remain-
ing resilient in the face of adversity.
     “They’re learning in different formats,”
she said. “They’re using more technology.
Some families have opted to have their stu-
dents only participate in remote learning.
Some are doing a little bit of (in-person)
school and remote, and some are attending
school in a more traditional format.
“It’s affected students differently, but I do
know that they’ve had to adjust their social
patterns, their activities. Even how they
walk down the hall at the high school looks
a lot different than a year ago, because we
do have pathways marked,” Nelson added.
There is some light at the end of the tun-
nel for educators. School personnel were
included in Phase 1B of COVID-19 vac-
cinations in Iowa, meaning all school staff
will have an opportunity to be vaccinated
prior to the end of the school year and CO-
VID-19 protocols may be able to be relaxed
   next school year.
“We’re hoping that as the days and
months to come, as the CDC releases more From start to finish, from claim to completion…
information, we’ll be able to make some
changes related to that,” Nelson said. “Right Quality + Honesty = Integrity!
now, though, we’re still in a position where
the state still requires that we quarantine • Carpentry • Siding • Windows
students who have been exposed to the vi-
rus, and have not been wearing masks. That
puts us in the position of still needing to fol- • Remodeling • Kitchens/Baths
   low through on those requirements.”
