Patient Care Considerations with External Fixators

                   • Pin Site Care: Clean daily using sterile technique to prevent osteomyelitis.
                   • Weight-Bearing Guidelines: Determine based on fracture stability and physician
                       recommendations.
                   • Psychosocial Support: Educate patients on device function and expected duration.
                   • Activity Modification: Encourage gentle movement to prevent joint stiffness.

               Complications and Risk Management

               1. Infection Control

                   • Most common complication, especially at pin insertion sites.
                   • Prevention: Daily pin cleaning, aseptic dressing changes, and early detection of
                       redness/swelling.

               2. Neurovascular Compromise

                   • Signs: Numbness, tingling, cool extremity, or pulselessness.
                   • Prevention: Regular neurovascular checks (capillary refill, motor function, and
                       sensation).

               3. Pin Loosening or Breakage

                   • Can lead to loss of fracture stability.
                   • Prevention: Regular assessment of frame integrity and early intervention if loosening
                       occurs.

               4. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

                   • Risk due to prolonged immobility.
                   • Prevention: Early mobilization, compression devices, and anticoagulation therapy as
                       needed.
