At the age of 16-17, he didn’t understand what Jack meant, but later he came to
understand.
"Come on, Marion, you need to get some air," he says. "You can stroll around in
the grass for a little while, I’ll go to the supermarket." He walks back into the
room, closes the patio door and tugs Marion, who’s now in front of the stairs.
"Get back inside, you little beast," he says with kind tone, trying to grab the neck
of the kitten and cat and putting them back inside the house. They have to take
the balcony if the want to go out. He closes the door behind him.
Marion meets on the other side of the door, after he had walked down all the
stairs in the building block. He pets Marion again, and it strides away towards
the yard once again, disappearing.
He slowly treads down the path in opposite direction of the road leading to the
bus stop.
After about ten minutes walking, he arrives at a small shopping plaza, which is
located in the middle of the 11 identical residential complexes, as a kind of
centre. There used to be several shops in the square, but four of them have since
then been closed; the windows have been covered with pieces of wood to avoid
further vandalism from the neighbourhood youth. Besides the supermarket, the
last store that’s open is a off-license kiosk, where you can bet on sports as well as
buying beer and sodas. The kiosk is well attended, and the owner Mustafa has
become a kind of friend of Jano. Mustafa was a neighbourhood hero, everyone in
the complexes knew him. Unfortunately, to great frustration of many, especially
the area's unemployed, Mustafa said he would have to close his kiosk soon, as it
is constantly exposed to vandalism. Not everyone likes him, he’s always said.
Outside the supermarket there is always activity. As he gets closer to the
square, he can see a large group of young people standing around a large, black
Audi, that’s blasting out music. The youngsters have parked the car less than ten
metres from the entrance to the supermarket, and now are arguing loudly with
the security guard in front.
“Fuck you! Why can't my friend's car stay here for two minutes, man?"
