She listens as he continues:
"Originally we as the PET were taken there because they had found some
jewellery and valuable art objects as well as your husband's old passport."
"His passport?!" she exclaims, looking sceptically at him.
“Yeah, don't worry. It sounds more dramatic than it is. We think there's an
explanation for that too."
Beatrice changes position. From sitting cross-legged, slightly laid back, she now
sits stiffly upright, puts on a pair of golden glasses on her nose, takes a ballpoint
pen and grabs her note block on the table and begins to write.
"Interesting," she says slightly sarcastically. "Abduction, my ex-husband's
passport, the PET, exclusive art and stolen jewels." She looks at him with a
serious expression.
"Let me explain." He pauses to find the right words.
"Gustav Kräsen, the head manager of that very Kräsen, is recently divorced.
Gustav Kräsen and his ex-wife, Devi Chen, are not on speaking terms any longer.
She had due of the overall chaos that arises in relation with such a divorce, got a
number of possessions from their joint home with her, which Gustav Kräsen’s
lawyer meant she should return immediately. In addition to that, they had found
that there were some other belongings she was going to have from him. Since the
former married couple is no longer on speaking terms, Devi Chen, presumably in
a fit of anger, chose to hand over the effects of a very private nature to the police,
who could then be responsible for the return to Gustav Kräsen."
He pauses. Beatrice sits with the hint of a smile on her lip.
"Oh yeah, there are a lot of cases like that, and it seems that the more wealthy
people are, the more they engage in revenge and minor petitions."
"Exactly," Tom completes her sentence.
"Thing catch is that Devi Chen is not just anyone, so the gossip about the divorce
has started to leak the German press. In other words, it is speculated that the
divorce could hurt Kräsen and German business tremendously because Devi
Chen comes from one of China's most influential business families."
"That’s crazy," says Beatrice while taking noting on her block.
Tom takes a few sips of his tea and lets his eyes rest on the snowfall in the
garden for a few seconds.
