Saturday, February 24 Munich
A low February sun casts long, sharp, shadows over Königs Platz in the
middle of Munich. The large elegant square originally built by the King of Bavaria
as a rallying point for the military, culture and state, is surrounded by palaces
that today house everything from museums to administration, embassies and
educational institutions. Made with inspiration from the Acropolis are two of the
most famous building works, the huge museum, and the white giant granite gate
to the west On a late afternoon like this, where the sun's rays twinkle around the
cape in the recessed statues and the many beautiful buildings, the space fully
lives up to its name.
The great weather has lured people outside and both the park and the
adjacent boulevards are buzzing with lively activity. For the past week, the city
has been more or less dormant, shrouded in a thick winter fog with
temperatures between zero and minus three degrees and strong winds from the
northwest. Instead of jumping into the winter-depressed and smelly metro train,
many choose to take the trip home on foot and enjoy the mild weather and the
area's many exclusive shops and cafes with long opening hours.
There are young people in groups around the benches that have been set
up, students immersed in conversations while they eagerly puff on their
cigarettes and chugs their beer, there are loving couples who are buried in each
