She doesn't say anything further and begins to turn around and walk away.
Dan pauses for a moment, bends over, grabs one of the empty beer cans and
hurls after her. The can doesn’t hit but instead clams down across the street
without anyone noticing its small appearance. They all pause now.
"Bloody slag," Dan says, while being noticeably red in the face of inner anger.
"Relax mate. There are so many idiots out there. Let's have a sip of lager, shall
we?" Nigel says, continuing: "Eugene, what happened when you were in prison?
Tell me the story"
“Well, as I said before, I organized various thefts, and it really went wrong when
we robbed a jeweller. I got a verdict, but I was too young, so I got out again
because it was the first offence… That they know of. ”
When Eugene gets insecure, he starts to read, and he becomes like that when
they talk about his past. It was like, he was two people at the same time. The
tough guy that everyone kept at a distance, and the other one, a very insecure
guy, hating having to open up.
“Take, for example, the two boys who are sitting there, watching us. Those little
lads, I can easily make them do all kinds of things for me, you know, like start up
some kind of gang. And in return for doing some minor jobs for me, I’ll protect
them and take care business, supplying them with bikes, better than the ones
they get at home. I’ll give them great stuff like free movie tickets and such. ”
"That sounds really smart," Dan says, and for once he suddenly feels inferior.
“If there is nothing to do, moneywise, tonight, then I’ll have to show you how it’s
done. Unfortunately, I don't know that many people here in London, but if there
is an opportunity, I could probably do something about it. "
They start playing again, Eugene's story of his strange past has given them new
courage to keep playing. They are playing hard and aggressive now. Dan no
longer sings, but now screams out the words under the street noise, and the
many people passing by, with the majority looking at them annoyed or tries to
ignore them.
Their presence in the street scene seems most of all as a reminder of a life most
people wouldn’t want to be apart of, and the scattering of the music as yet
another stressful feature of the big city boom.
