Tanned hide An animal hide that has been chemically treated (usu. with tannic acid) to prevent
                                       deterioration or decay.
Turk’s Head A type of knot in which a (usu.) single cord is wrapped over and under itself to form
what appears to be a continuous braid or plait having separate parts and no ends; usually
abbreviated TH Knot, there exist many different patterns of forming the wrappings and
the subsequent knot is described by the number of bights to its extremes and the number
of crossings between those bights, known as leads.
Twisted line Line that has been formed by rotating the yarns or fibres about their longitudinal axis; a
                                       line formed by such action.
Underhand The manner of moving one line past another by crossing beneath the other line; the
                                       opposite of overhand.
Varnish The resin of the cypress tree (Tetraclinis articulate and others) dissolved in one of several
solvents that, when applied to wood, dries to a hard finish.
Whipping The action resulting from making multiple wraps of a twine around the end of a piece of
larger rope or line to prevent that line from fraying.
Working end That part of a line used in making a knot that performs the principal movement during
creation of the knot; opposite of standing end.
Yarns The twisted fibres that form the base units of laid and twisted lines; the base units of yarns
are twisted into strands or are used as twisted fibres subsequently woven in groups or
                                       singly to form braided line.
