There are graves on the campus of Honam Theological University which located at 108
Yangnim-dong, Gwangju, including the grave of Pastor Eugene Bell, who came to Korea
in 1895, established the mission departments in Mokpo and Gwangju, and evangelized
for 30 years in Korea, as well as those of 22 other missionaries, their wives and children.
In 1979, the missionaries from American Southern Presbyterian Mission who were in
charge of missionary work in the Honam region, decided to leave Korea considering the
Korean church could stand on its feet. Before leaving Korea, they brought the graves of
missionaries here which scattered in various places 4 from Mokpo and 7 from Suncheon,
The Entrance
and made missionary Graveyard.
Honam Theological University & Seminary
"A Yangnim Garden Missionary Graveyard where
those who lived a life of love and dedication are resting.”
“In 1955, the Korean missionary group from the
Presbyterian Church in the United States established
Honam Bible School, and the school was renamed
Honam Theology Seminary in 1963.”
Honam Theological University & Seminary was established in 1955 by the missionaries
from the Presbyterian Church in the United States. The school’s objective was to cultivate
church leaders from among the residents of farming and fishing villages in the Gwangju
area. Later, the Honam Bible School needed to offer a higher quality of education. To meet
this need, Honam Bible School, Sunchon Maesan Theology School, and Gwangju Night
School merged under the name Honam Theology Institution.
A short time later, in 1963, Honam Theology Institution was renamed Honam Theology
Seminary. Honam Theology Seminary was recognized as a Korean university in 1984. A
church music department was established in 1988. Honam Theology Seminary finally
became a university. A graduate school of theology was approved in 1995. With the
addition of the professional graduate school, Honam Theological University took the shape
it has today. If you go to Honam Theological University, you can see various missionary
footsteps, such as Yangnim Garden, the missionary graveyard, and the missionaries’ private
Yangnim Garden Missionary Graveyard where those who lived a life of love and dedication are resting houses.
