Along with Noryangjin, Dongjakjin, Hangangjin, and Songpajin, Yanghwajin (meaning “Willow-
flower ferry dock”) was the five docks in Seoul. Especially, Yangwhajin was an important
strategic region for commercial transactions and military defense during the Joseon
Dynasty. Yanghwajin had abundant water levels which allowed numerous over-sized ships
to dock. Nearby, there is a peak called Jamdubong which was named because it looks like
the head of a silkworm. Many Catholic believers were cut off and died at Jamdubong, so it
is sometimes called Jeoldusan (cutting off head mountain) .
The reason why Seoul Foreign Cemetery is located in Yanghwajin is because of J. W. Heron
who became the superintendent of Chejungwon following Dr. Allen. While Dr. Heron was
taking care of patients suffering from epidemic dysentery, he himself became infected
and passed away on July 26, 1890, at the age of 34. At that time, many missionaries Graves of Children Underwood Family
asked Emperor Gojong for a foreigners’ cemetery, and Emperor Gojong allowed them to
use Yanghwaj as Foreign Missionary Cemetery. Among the graves found at Yanghwajin,
many belong to foreign missionaries and their families who dedicated their lives to the
Korean people during the dark era of Japan’s occupation of Korea. We need to learn the
faith of martyrdom here. There are about 500 tombs and among them, 145 tombs are of
missionaries.

lives to give, Korea
should have them all.”
