            Gwanghyewon, known as the first Western medical institution in Korea, was founded by
            H. N. Allen  (Korean name: An Ryeon 安蓮) , an American missionary, under the name of Royal   Chungdong First Methodist Church

            22nd year of Emperor Gojong's reign) . Allen came to Korea in September, 1884 as a medical
            missionary from the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. As he saved a

            Coup, he became close to Emperor Gojong, and
