Incheon (Jemulpo) was the gateway to Joseon in modern Korean history. Missionary Allen,
who first came to Korea in 1884, also entered the country through this place, and
missionary Underwood and Appenzeller also entered the country through this place in
1885. At that time, the missionaries were afraid of endemic diseases when they entered
the land, so they tried to move by ship if possible. This is why missionaries left Japan
and arrived at Busan Port and took a boat to Jemulpo to go to Seoul. Therefore, Incheon
became the starting point of Korean Christianity. Missionary Appenzeller, who arrived at
Jemulpo with Missionary Underwood, reportedly knelt down and prayed as soon as he got
            off the ship.
“We came here on Easter. May He who on that day burst asunder the bars of death break
the bands that, bind this people, and bring them to the light and liberty of God’s children.”
Goodwin House Centennial Memorial Tower of Protestantism was built to commemorate the entry of
Missionaries Underwood and Appenzeller on April 5, 1885.

The first Anglican Church missionary to Korea was J. R. Wolf. After working in China, he

The Anglican Church of Korea established St. Michael Seminary in 1914 in Gangwha
Island, and the school moved to current Hangdon Campus in 1956.
It was reorganized into the Anglican Seminary in 1989, Sungkonghoe Theological Seminary
in 1992, and the name changed to Sungkonghoe University in 1994. Anglican Church is not
a very large denomination in Korea. However, Sungkonghoe University actively participated
in the Korean pro-democracy movement and has been teaching about human rights and
