“Byeongchon Evangelical Holiness Church”
-The faith of 66 people even unto death
The Byeongchon Evangelical Holiness
Church suffered during the Korean War.
The communist forces, which became
disadvantageous after landing of the UN

Four months after the church began, the March 1st Movement took place, and Rev. John
Thomas of the Oriental Missionary Society was beaten by Japanese police after coming
down to Ganggyeong. Rev. John Thomas left Korea because of the event, and the British
minister filed a lawsuit on his behalf and won. With the compensation received, the
Ganggyeong Evangelical Holiness Church was built. However, this chapel is currently
owned by Ganggyeong Bugok Methodist Church. Ganggyeong Evangelical Holiness Church
is famous for being the first church to refuse to worship the shrine. The reason why 57

Sunday school students refused to attend the shrine was the teaching of Kim Bok-hee, Korean War
