Emma Woodward was 11 years old. She liked swimming and riding
her bike. But one day Emma woke up with a headache. It got worse
and worse and Emma felt very ill. Her parents took her to a hospital
and she saw the doctor straight away. Emma couldn’t walk or stand
up. The doctor looked at her very carefully. ‘There’s a problem with
Emma’s head, she needs an operation straight away.’
After the operation Emma was asleep. When she woke up she had
to stay in bed for a long time. She couldn’t remember how to do
anything. The doctor said ‘Emma’s legs are not strong. She needs
to use a wheelchair. When she’s not in the wheelchair, she needs
crutches.’ Emma was very tired and didn’t try to walk. ‘I can’t do it!
she said. Her parents were worried. ‘What can we do? How can we
help Emma?’ they asked.
One day Emma’s mum heard about the Helper Dog Project. The project had dogs to help people with
many different kinds of problems.
The next day, they went to see the Helper Dog Project. Emma was
on her crutches. She went from the car to the
building. She was very tired. She sat in a
chair. Then one of the dogs came over.
His name was Jasper, and he was the
biggest dog in the room. He looked
at Emma. Then he put his paw on
r Emma’s leg. Emma knew Jasper was
her new best friend.
