Summary of Shiur – Halachot of Yom Kippur
The obligation to eat on Erev Yom Kippur and how it relates to women
Yoma 81b/Shulchan Aruch – there is a mitzvah to eat on Erev Yom Kippur.
Rashi – the purpose is in order to prepare for the fast
Rabeinu Yona – this replaces the Yom Tov meal that we should have on Yom Kippur
Rema – it is also forbidden to fast on Erev Yom Kippur
Rabbi Akiva Eiger – it is uncertain whether women are included in the mitzvah to eat on Erev Yom
Kippur
Ktav Sofer – the conclusion is that women are included
The obligation to ask forgiveness from others and publicizing one’s sins
Mishnah Yoma 8:9 – Yom Kippur does not atone for sins between man and man until one appeases
one’s friend
Rambam – if one injures another or causes him financial damage, he must make a verbal confession
in addition to the financial restitution, in order to receive atonement
Kesef Mishneh- the Rambam’s expression “verbal confession” means that one must ask for atone-
ment from the injured party even if one only injured his property
Lechem Mishneh – asking forgiveness is necessary only if one steals from another, but for other
financial damages, compensation is sufficient
Mirkevet Hamishneh – the Rambam never meant that one has to ask atonement from the injured
when he stated that one needs to make a “verbal confession”
Yoma 86b – one should publicize certain sins
Rambam – one only publicizes sins between man and man but not between man and God
Raavad – one needs to publicly ask forgiveness even for sins between man and God that are well
known
Shulchan Aruch – one should ask forgiveness from the offended party three times if they do not
grant it after the first attempt. If the offended party is one’s teacher, one needs to ask forgiveness
