Exceptional cases regarding fasting
1. Pregnant and Nursing women
Pesachim 54b – must fast as usual
Yoma 82a – if a pregnant woman says she needs to eat, we permit her to do so
If the fetus alone is in danger
Behag – even if the fetus alone is in danger, the mother may eat
Other Rishonim quoted in the Rosh – it is not permitted to desecrate the day for the fetus alone
Biur Halacha – if a nursing woman has a sick child who doesn’t want to nurse from other people,
she doesn’t need to fast
2. Yoledet (woman who gave birth)
Shulchan Aruch – a woman who gave birth within three days doesn’t fast at all. These days are not
seventy two hours but calendar days
Mishna Berura – one may be lenient to count them according to seventy two hours (and eat on
Yom Kippur until the seventy-two hours pass)
Shulchan Aruch – a yoledet is defined as one who either: A) cannot walk by herself; B) is on the
birthing table; C) is already bleeding from the birth
