b. Chatam Sofer, Rabbi Akiva Eiger, Melamed Leho’il – One must leave a
minimum length such that the tip of the hair can be bent back to the root (3-5
millimeters).
5. Amount of hair that must be left
a. Rambam – One needs to leave a minimum of forty hairs.
b. Smag – There is no minimum; one may not cut any of the hairs in the entire
area.
c. Shulchan Aruch – One may not cut the entire width of the area.
6. Growing the pe’ot
a. Some have the custom to grow the pe’ot as a hidur mitzva.
b. Yalkut Yosef – Sefardim do not have such a custom, but it is permissible to do
so, and there is no concern of haughtiness.
7. The custom of the chalaka or upsherin
a. Some have the custom to cut a child’s hair only after he turns three and then to
begin teaching him Torah.
b. Some (in Israel) have the custom to wait until Lag BaOmer and to perform the
upsherin in Meron.
