        This is the size of a gris regarding a baheret, and similarly is the

        the connection is derived from a gezeira shava (verbal analogy) of    החרקד  ש"גב  הל  'ירמג  'יעגנד  החרקמד

        The Shulchan Aruch (also cited above in source #24) codifies the halacha in accordance with the
        stringent opinion that one may not cut off hair close to the skin anywhere within the region of
        the pe’ot.

        And the practical halacha is that even though one cannot deny   תוטשפש שיחכהל ןיאש יפ לע ףא הכלהלו

        accordance with the Smag and Tosefta mentioned, and “do not    מ"מ ףיקהל רומגת אל 'יפ ופיקת אלו ל"נה
        round” means do not complete rounding [i.e., do not cut it all    שושחל ףסוי תיבה וניברמ תאצוי הרות רבכ
        off],  nevertheless, the  Torah idea  has already  emerged from    רתוי וליפא חטשה בחור לכו ,תורמוחה לכל
        our teacher the  Beit Yosef  to take all of the stringencies into    וא רעתב ונייהו ,די וב עגת אל תורעש 'ממ
        consideration [concerning this issue], and the entire width of
        the area, even if it is more than forty hairs, one should not touch,    ,י"בב שרופמ כ"שמכ רעת ןיעכ םיירפסמב
        i.e., with a razor or scissors like a razor [i.e., a blade], as the Beit    שממ תוכורא םש תורעשה םיחינמש המו
        Yosef states explicitly, and that which people leave the hairs there    .ול רמאי שודקו תודיסחו הלבק ירבדמ אוה
        especially long [in length, even though it is not required] is based
        on tradition and piety, and one [who does so] is termed holy.


        5.   The basis for the calculations used here is in the Mishna (Negaim 6:1), where a gris is defined as a square the size of three lentils by three lentils,
           which is nine lentils, and each lentil is defined as having a width of four hairs.
