And he is liable only for taking them off with a razor – The תאפו :ר”ת .רעתב ונלטיש דע בייח וניאו
Sages taught: “And the corner of their beard they may not םירפסמב וחלג ’יפא לוכי – וחלגי אל םנקז
shave” (Vayikra 21:5). One might have thought even if he ,תיחשת אל יא ;תיחשת אל :ל”ת ?בייח אהי
shaved the beard with scissors, he would be liable; therefore, ?בייח אהי ינטיהרו טקלמב וטקל םא לוכי
the verse states: “You may not destroy the edge of your beard” חוליג ?דציכ אה ,וחלגי אל :רמול דומלת
(Vayikra 19:27). If the verse had stated only: “You may not .רעת הז :רמוא יוה ,התחשה וב שיש
destroy,” one might have thought that even if he removed the
hair with tweezers or with a plane he would be liable; therefore,
the verse states: “They may not shave.” How so? One is liable
only for shaving that involves destruction. You must say that
this is shaving with a razor.
The Rivan explains that “shaving” [gilu’ach] is defined as cutting one’s beard using an implement that is
usually used for shaving, while destroying [hashchata] is when one removes the entire hair to its root –
without leaving any stubble at all.

Therefore the verse states do not destroy – And scissors do not םיתיחשמ ןניא םירפסמו – תיחשת אל ל”ת
destroy, for they do not cut the hair close to the root, as a blade does. .רעתכ רקיע דצב רעיש ןיכתוח ןיאש
Shaving that involves destruction – A manner of shaving with וב חלגל ךרד – התחשה וב שיש חוליג
it and destroying, i.e., a blade. But a plane destroys but is not ןיאו תיחשמ ינטיהר לבא רעת ונייהו תיחשמו
generally used to shave, and scissors shave, but do not destroy.
.םיתיחשמ ןיאו ןיחלגמ םירפסמו וב חלגל ךרד
