It is very commendable that the drawing not be complete, ,ירמגל םלש רויצה היהי אלש ,רדהל דאמ יוארו
i.e., including the legs. Rather, [it should only focus on] the ןוילעה דצה םא – יכ ,םילגרה םע דחי רמולכ
upper body, which is the main splendor of a person and his ותטלבהו םדאה תראפת רקיע אוהש ,ודבל
expression of his spiritual nature, as this is the ideal desired ילאידיאה שקובמה והזש ,תינחורה תיפואה
[portion of a person] by the best artists.

The Taz presents an additional stringency even regarding an image of a face alone, though many
contemporary Acharonim are more lenient (Yalkut Yosef; Shevet HaLevi 7:134). This discussion is relevant
to using a “sheitel-head” upon which to place a wig.

But concerning shapes of a head – It is written in the Perisha ל”שר םשב בותכ השירפב – ’וכ שאר תרוצ לבא
in the name of the Maharshal that the Smag leaned toward :דבל םדא ףוצרפב ’יפא רוסיאל הטונ ג”מסבד
being stringent even if there was just a face by itself.
The Acharonim debate whether one who wishes to be stringent may object to others taking photographs of
himself. According to Rav Menashe Klein in the Mishneh Halachot, one has the right to prevent others from
photographing him, while Rav Nissim Karelitz holds that one has no such right, and especially in today’s
times in any case most people are not stringent about this matter.

Is a person permitted to refuse to let a photographer .והמלצי אלש ם ָּ ל ַ צל תוחמל םדא לוכי יא
photograph him? ומצע לע רימחמד ןאמל איעבימ אל התעמו…
…Now then, [it stands to reason] that not only would one ,םירחאב תוחמל לכויש – םלטצהל אלש ללכב
who is stringent upon himself not to be photographed be able ,ארוסיאל היל אריבס אוהש רבד ול ושעי אלש
to object to others not to do anything [i.e., photograph him], as – ודי לע אבה םלועל קזנ םוש ול אובי אלו
he views this as a prohibition; and no damage should come to ,םלטצהל םידיפקמ ןיאש םדא ינב וליפא אלא
him in the next world because of it. Rather, even someone who תוחמל לוכי םוקמ לכמ ,םלצא אוה תוליגרו
is not particular about being photographed and is accustomed
to it may still object to someone [photographing him]… and םושמ םג הזב שיד ,הארנ ןיד ןמ רבו …םירחאב
aside from that it seems that there is also a problem of theft, as םוליצה תושר רוכמל םדאה דיב ירהש ,לזג
a person may sell the right of photography to one who wishes אצמנ – הז לע רכש לבקיו ,ומלצל הצורש ימל
to photograph him and receive payment for it, which means he העד הרוי ”קחצי תיב“ ת”וש ןייעו .ןוממב וקיזמ
is causing him financial damage. And see the Beit Yitzchak that הרות ישודיח קיתעהל רוסאש ,הע ןמיס ב קלח
it is forbidden to copy Torah novellae from another without םא ,התעמו .תושרב אלש םדא לש ודי בתכמ
permission. Therefore, if it is forbidden to copy another’s ןכש לכ – תושרב אלש וריבח בתכ םלצל רוסא
manuscript, certainly it is forbidden to do so to his body. And לזג רוסיא ןיאד רחא םוקמב יתבתכד ףאו .ופוג
even though I wrote elsewhere that no prohibition of theft .ותושר ילב רוסא – ם ֵּ לצל לבא ,הייארב
exists with regard to viewing something, to take a photograph
is still forbidden without his consent.
