About the Cookbook

'What are you going to eat today? '
                             — is probably one of the most frequently asked questions among
Chinese students studying abroad when they come across each other,
and it is also a way to quickly open up a conversation upon first encounter.
Cooking in the other half of the globe can be challenging,
                                                   yet it is also rewarding.

This cookbook gathers my own experience and knowledge
                           - recipes that I made again and again - as well as inspiration from 275
participants in the survey I conducted, with the hope that these diverse
opinions will encourage more people to think about the ways they cook, to
both maintain connection with home and embrace the differences
                                                  during their time abroad.

Considering that students are often too busy with their studying to spend time
cooking, the recipes in my cookbook require minimum effort, ensure well-being
whilst remaining authentic and tasty. On the days when they are homesick,
there are recipes for a taste of the Home Country, whilst there are also recipes
for a taste of the Host Country to experience the local food.

This cookbook is my experimentation with food and culture
                                                     - and will be yours.
It will open up a world of new experiences to the host country.

The recipes, especially those in the first half, were carefully selected
to suit people from different parts of China,
and were arranged according to difficulties.
                                              Specifically, all recipes serve one,
and considering that doing the dishes may be one of the most important
reasons that keeps people from cooking - a result found out from the survey,
all recipes require minimum utensils and effort,
with the number and kinds of dishes-to-wash provided.

Discover the surprise in the first half of this cookbook,
and have a bite of the local food in the second half!
