ROBERT TRENT JONES
Hazeltine Aerial 1970
obert Trent Jones worked on 21 U.S. Open
Rvenues, becoming known as the “Open
Doctor,” a moniker that has been passed on to
his son, Rees Jones. Jones prided himself on Hazeltine Aerial 2019
making his courses difficult and requiring players
to take risks. He guarded his greens with water hazards and penal bunkers and famously said: “Every
golf hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey.“ It was Jones’ protection of par that made him the favored
designer of the United States Golf Association. It also made him the scourge of many players. Jones’ original
layout of Hazeltine National included many blind tee shots and hard doglegs. Many of these holes would be
straightened following the 1970 U.S. Open, a layout that has been kept intact since the 1983 U.S. Senior Open.
