Firm Profile

Zimmerman Studio, LLC is an architecture firm founded to focus on small projects
for educational and research institutions. We bring strong design and technical
skills to every project, gained during 20 years of professional practice.

One strength of our firm is our expertise with technically demanding projects.
Renovation projects are a specialty, particularly renovations of research and
teaching laboratories. Renovations require detailed analysis throughout the
project, to determine the appropriate scope of work for the project, and how the
construction of the existing building affects the design of the renovation. We
have successfully completed projects in 100-year-old historic buildings and in
landmarks of modern architecture such as Louis I. Kahn’s Richards Medical
Building at the University of Pennsylvania.

We provide a range of architectural services from programming through contract
administration. Working with complex institutions, the success of each project
(large or small) is dependent on balancing the needs of all of the stakeholders.
• We understand the perspective of each group: the faculty focus on
providing an excellent research or teaching space; the University-wide
focus on compliance with a range of standards(environmental health &
safety; IT cabling and equipment; and engineering standards); and the
Facilities Services emphasis on meeting schedule and budget goals.
• We listen to our clients to learn about their goals and priorities, and
then we develop a design that translates those abstract ideas into
physical form. Throughout the project, we communicate regularly with
the project team, to alert everyone about issues that require resolution,
and to let everyone know when resolution occurs. Sharing information
consistently reduces the risk that difficulties will arise toward the end of
documentation or during construction.
• Our experience with a wide range of research and teaching laboratories
helps us to work with faculty and Facilities Services. We balance strong
design with knowledge about constructability and codes.
• We discuss budget or scheduling concerns with the project team, and
develop strategies to reconcile scope, budget, and schedule. These
strategies often include documenting Alternates in the bid package.

Sustainability is an important consideration in all of our work, at every level of a
project. Renovating and/or adding on to an existing building extends the useful
life of the building. We design every project with consideration for conservation
of material and energy resources – our design decisions focus on choices that
will reduce yearly operating costs, and that make the most effective use of the
construction budget.
