Visit to Biodiversity Center
The students of GHV, started an innovative program to intercept single use plastic materials and lock it away
into bottles making them Eco-Shells. Students carried a used and empty PET bottle and filled it with single use
plastics that they use or encounter, like wrappers, covers/ packets/ packaging material, such that is converted
into such an Eco-Shell. The plastic bottles thus stuffed with compressed material turn them into little “magic
wands”creating a nice and compact Eco-Shell which is then sealed away with its own cap.
This idea was proposed by students of Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai and on 25th February 2019, the
students visited the Coastal and Biodiversity Centre at Airoli, and deposited the bottles that were collected for
further useful purposes. Then the students were taken for a walk on the jetty through the magnificent mangroves
and birds, where they could see for themselves the benefits that their actions could produce. Then they visited the
museum, saw a documentary at the premises about the rich flora and fauna of the Thane creek and also enjoyed
the butterfly park in the premises of the Biodiversity Center.
Thus we all can successfully intercept and sequester plastic into Eco-shells before they land up in landfills or
oceans, and pollute the environment. In this way we can contribute to make India a world leader in management
of the huge plastic problem affecting the environment.
